Q: How does a storage system for my plugin solar kit work?

In short: as easy as a plugin solar kit. There are different types of storage systems, can be divided into these main categories:Storage for already installed plugin solar kitsIf you already have a plug-in solar kit or another solar installation installed, you can add a storage system without modifying your panels or microinverter. These systems work together with your existing setup and store surplus solar energy for later use.Current compatible solutions include:Marstek Venus AMarstek Venus DMarstek Venus E 3.0Marstek Venus E MiniAnker Solarbank 4 ProAll storage systems require a Smart Meter to monitor energy flows, detect surplus production and manage grid usage when needed.Smart kits (with storage)If you want to install solar panels and storage at the same time, a Smart Kit is the easiest option.Smart kits combine:solar panels, storage systems, mounting structures and cables. They allow you to produce, store and use solar energy in a simple plug & play way.Standalone storage systemsStandalone storage systems do not require a direct connection to solar panels. They connect to a standard household socket and:store surplus energy produced by your solar installation, charge and discharge through your home’s electricity network, can also be charged with grid energy, for example during low-cost tariff periods or if no solar panels are installed.A Smart Meter is required to manage energy flows correctly.

Q: Can I also charge my storage with power from the grid?

In short: with a hybrid storage system, yes. Most storage systems that have launched in recent months include “hybrid” charging. This means that the storage system can not only discharge into the home’s power network, but also charge from it.This functionality allows you to top up your battery with power from the grid. This makes sense if your power tariff has very cheap prices in some dayparts, when topping up costs little, and use that power in the more expensive day parts.

Q: How much storage do I need for my home?

In short: this depends on your consumption levels.Storage needs can be looked at from several sides:Solar kit production. If you look at how much your solar kit produces during an entire day, and how much you consume on the spot, the rest is what you will have to store. For example, if your Plus 2000 kit produces 8 kWh per day but during the day you only use 3 kWh, then you need at least 5 kWh of storage for your surplus, to use it when the sun doesn’t shine.Household demand. If you know how much you consume per day at home after subtracting the immediate consumption of your solar kit’s production, you know what you're missing. A part of that can be covered by storing your solar kit’s surplus. The rest can be covered by charging in low-cost hours from the grid. For example, if you consume 10 kWh per day in the above example, you will need 2 kWh to charge from the grid on top of the 5 kWh mentioned above. And remember, that when it comes to batteries, you should never discharge below 10% and never charge over 90%. This means that you can only use 80% of any battery capacity. This would mean that in the above scenario of 7 kWh of required storage, you will need a storage system of 9 kWh, whose 80%-capacity of 7,2 kWh covers your needs.

Q: Will a storage system also work during power outages?

In short: Some of them do.Several storage systems that have launched recently have an “AC outlet”, also known as “emergency outlet” or “anti-blackout”. This is a Schuko socket that delivers electricity when the network goes down. These systems can also be used in homes that are not grid connected.During power outages, like the “apagón” in Spain, Portugal and parts of France in April 2025, these systems provide critical base power to their customers, literally “keeping the lights on”. With sufficient storage capacity, and daily recharge with your solar kit, you can easily get through power outages also for longer periods of time.

Q: Does a storage system store all my surplus energy?

In short: yes it can.For any storage system to work effectively, or be “intelligent” as sometimes labelled, you need a smart meter. This device measures the flow of electricity from the grid to your home.If you consume from the grid, it will tell your storage system to feed in more, trying to reduce or eliminate grid consumption. If you feed surplus energy into the grid, it will tell your storage system to store that surplus energy. These changes happen in real time in fractions of a second, and maximize the self consumption of your solar energy. Since you don’t feed into the grid you’re also not subject to certification or registration requirements in many countries.

Product details

The Marstek Venus E Max is the largest version of Marstek's best-selling Venus E energy storage system line. It is the larger version of the award-winning Venus E 3.0, the best-selling residential battery in Europe in 2026. It connects to any standard Schuko socket at home and does not require an installer. It does not need to be connected to a solar installation. It also works in homes without solar panels, allowing users to charge during cheap electricity tariff hours and discharge during expensive hours, reducing electricity bills.

The 10 kWh storage capacity covers more than the average European household's daily electricity consumption.

Its 3.6 kW input and output capacity also provides enough power to cover the peak consumption of larger household appliances. The system integrates seamlessly with Marstek's portable EV charger and offers smart EV charging control.

The Marstek Venus E Max comes with an integrated 3.6 kW AC backup outlet that keeps your essential devices running in case of a power outage.

The warranty covers 10 years or 10,000 cycles, and the expected lifespan is 15 years.

The Smart Meter measures your home's electricity consumption in real time. If you consume electricity from the grid, it instructs your storage system to discharge and reduce grid consumption. If the Smart Meter detects energy being fed into the grid, it instructs your storage system to charge and avoid feed-in. The reaction time is measured in milliseconds. This maximizes the self-consumption of your solar power and your savings.

The AI-powered BMS manages the use of your solar energy in real time, optimizing charging, discharging, and storage. Choose between manual, self-consumption, and AI modes to ensure zero feed-in to the public power grid. The Venus E Max also offers VPP energy trading.

In combination with the new Marstek Smart Box 2.0, the system can be expanded to 10.8 kW output and 30 kWh of storage.

Always fully loaded

Charge from your home's grid

The Venus E Max charges from your home's electricity grid with up to 3.6 kW. It connects to a standard Schuko socket.

Use all your solar surplus

If you have a solar kit or rooftop installation, store all your energy surplus through your home network. The Marstek Smart Meter detects when you feed surplus into the public grid. This means that you produce more solar power than you can consume on the spot. Surplus feed-in triggers the Marstek Venus E Max to start charging immediately, avoid any feed-in and store all your surplus for later use.

No PV? No problem! Avoid paying peak electricity prices

If you do not have a solar installation the Marstek Venus E Max can reduce your power bill using its bidirectional charging function. Charge your battery during the hours when electricity prices are lower and use that energy when you need it most.

Excellent service

The entire process went smoothly. The website is simple and effective. The payment process was transparent and seamless. The shipment was on time, although the carrier split it into two packages with only one tracking number, which caused some confusion for me, but this was quickly clarified by Robinsun's customer service.
