Today we celebrate World Sun Day

June 21 is World Sun Day, which happens on the day of summer solstice, as declared by the United Nations. It is the day with the longest sunshine hours in the northern hemisphere. For solar energy generation this is one of the most productive days of the year. That’s why at Robinsun we’d like to celebrate it, reminding us all of how we can generate free, abundant and sustainable energy to power our daily lives.

What happens on World Sun Day or the Summer Solstice?

The summer solstice occurs when one of Earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere (northern and southern). For the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice happens on 21 June. It is the day with the longest daylight hours and shortest night of the year. On this day, the sun is at its highest position in the sky. At either pole there is continuous daylight at the time of its summer solstice. The opposite event is the winter solstice. In 2019 the UN declared 21 June “World Sun Day” to advocate the awareness of the importance of the sun on our lives and acknowledge its universal cultural heritage.

The impact of the sun on our daily energy consumption and generation

In ancient times, the summer solstice was seen as a day that symbolizes the fertility of the land, agricultural and food production systems and cultural heritage. In today’s world, long sunshine hours reduce energy consumption tied to illumination and heating, and maximize the production of solar panels and renewable energy generation. That is why today the production of a plug & play solar kit is likely to be the best of the year in Europe and the northern hemisphere. If you have installed it with a vertical mount at 90 degrees, it will be the opposite, and your best day of production will be on 21 December, the winter solstice.
